What if by a mistake your kid picks up your phone and gets access to it? What if the first thing he/she does is not going to the games but to your gallery. What will your reaction be? A "no" or a "yes".
Times have changed way back but it started with the introduction
of GSM in 1999 into the Nigerian market. But before then what was it like? Am sure
some of us must have forgotten such experiences. So let’s dig a little deep to how it was way back
and have some good laugh.
NITEL was the face of telecommunication in Nigeria for a long time, like NEPA they wielded so much power. Not every home had a telephone and those that had such luxury guarded it with
every strategy they could employ to prevent arbitrary usage. Many parents did
put a padlock on them, I know this sounds unimaginable right! It’s the truth,
nothing but the truth! But like Adam and
Eve got tempted and ate the apple, so did the end of the month bills increased despite the controlled
measures. I do have vivid memories
of what some people did but won’t let the cat out of the bag. (lols) I feel for parents’way back then, as for the smart aunts and uncles or friends who always had their way around
the phones, I say hmm.
There were poles with long black cables connecting to houses with telephones, they were every where but have been replaced by huge telecom mast today,
there was this you had
your neighbours without such privileges knocking on your door at times at odd
hours to receive calls, while in the real sense, your privacy has just been
intruded. (lols) The manual search through the
phone directory for a particular number can be tedious at times especially if
it’s one you are not familiar with. The phone only had one function: to dial.
No storage facilities, no selfies, no apps and what have you. Yet it felt like
heaven to every home that had a telephone and a status thing. At that moment, life could not have
been any more fun. We had one and that was a rare privilege!
Now in the 21st century, with the advent of
democracy in Nigeria, the impact of the GSM technology has shaped how things are done now. Easier and faster means of communication, no unnecessary NITEL staffs climbing poles to disconnect your cables owing to accrued unpaid bills. It brought an absolute end to padlocking
of phones. Owning a phone is no longer a luxury but a common thing, they come in
grades and styles depending on your taste and financial muscle. A Wikipedia source from a Newzoo's Global Mobile Market Report, April 2017
indicates there are 28,381,000 smart phone users in
Nigeria, that is massive! As much as we have this easily accessible device and store our favourite contents, we are responsible for what we store. It says a lot about who we are and how we can be perceived. Just like they say "The way you dress is the way you will be addressed"
Does your stored videos, images, music and more inspire others or turns them off? What are your caller tunes? Loads of time, I have had reasons to dance to some and kind of shake my head at others. These may look so little buts speaks so loud.

What does your mobile contents say about you?
